Assistant at Lands and Surveys Commission Shot Dead in Canal Number 2 Polder Robbery Incident

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – An Assistant at the Lands and Surveys Commission was fatally shot by bandits during a robbery at a wedding house in Canal Number 2 Polder, West Bank Demerara, on the night of December 31, 2023. The incident also left another man seriously injured.

Natram ‘Vishal’ Persaud, 40, was shot in the back of the head by one of three bandits after confronting them as they invaded the wedding house. The Guyana Police Force reported that Persaud scuffled with one of the suspects before a gunshot was heard, causing him to fall to the ground. The bandits then fled the scene, having also robbed 57-year-old farmer Manipaul ‘Anand’ Rambarhak of his gold hand band valued at GY$250,000. Ramharack received a gunshot injury to his stomach and underwent emergency surgery, remaining in critical condition at Woodlands Hospital.

The wedding celebration of Mr and Mrs Samsundar was underway at the time of the robbery, with approximately 60 people in attendance. The masked bandits entered the open gate of the wedding house, firing two rounds at Ramharack before robbing him.

The police processed the scene and recovered three .45mm spent shells, while also noting the presence of several CCTV cameras affixed to the building where the wedding function was held. Investigations are ongoing, and detectives plan to review the footage captured by the cameras.

The tragic incident has left the community in shock, prompting concerns about the safety and security of public events in the area. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the perpetrators to come forward and assist with the investigation.
