JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – A 67-year-old man from Johnstown is facing 30 charges of animal cruelty after leaving behind 10 dead cats and five live cats without food or water when he moved from his residence, authorities say. Daniel Arthur Gates, of the 500 block of Dorothy Avenue, has been charged with 10 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, 10 counts of cruelty to animals, and 10 counts of neglect of animals by Humane Society police officers.
According to a complaint affidavit, the Humane Society of Cambria County in Richland Township received a complaint from the landlord on Nov. 22, reporting animals that were left abandoned at the residence. Following this, a search warrant was executed by a Humane Society official and Johnstown police on the Dorothy Avenue property on Dec. 2, when 10 dead cats and five live cats without food or water were allegedly found.
It was reported in the affidavit that dogs abandoned at the residence had been previously removed with the landlord’s consent. Gates is yet to be arraigned on the criminal charges filed before District Judge Brian Subich of Johnstown.
