Convicted Wausau Woman Avoids Jail Time in Infant Death, Sentenced to 10 Years Probation

WAUSAU, Wis. – A 26-year-old woman from Wausau, Wisconsin has been sentenced to 10 years of probation after being convicted in the death of her 3-month-old child. Shailey Huron, who now resides in Texas, agreed to the terms of a plea deal in October and will serve her probation in her home state. If she violates the terms of her probation, she will face one year in jail.

The case stems from an incident on March 30, 2020, when police and ambulance crews responded to a home in Wausau for a report of a baby who was not breathing. An investigation revealed that Huron had invited two men to her home on the evening of March 29 and had engaged in drinking and marijuana use with one of the men before going to bed, placing her 3-month-old infant in bed with them. The following day, she found the child unresponsive.

Records show that Huron had been educated and warned not to co-sleep with her infant by a hospital nurse, a pediatrician, and a public health nurse, in addition to being provided educational material on safe sleeping habits. An autopsy indicated the cause of death as accidental asphyxia associated with an unsafe sleeping environment.

As part of her sentencing, Huron must complete parenting classes, maintain employment, and will not be allowed to work in childcare.
