JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA – The new year in Jacksonville, Florida has begun with a tragic similarity to the end of 2023. Just days into the year, a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot, following the death of a 16-year-old and 10 other killings in the final two weeks of the previous year.
Law enforcement officers responded to a call on Castle Boulevard and found the teenage victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he did not survive. At this early stage of the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office had limited information, noting that witnesses heard gunshots and discovered the victim at the scene.
The shooting comes after the death of another 16-year-old boy just a few days prior at Coopers Hawk apartments. The Sheriff’s Office reported that two groups, mostly juveniles, were involved in an altercation during a party when shots were fired. It was unclear whether the teen was the intended target or was part of the dispute, and if there was more than one shooter.
In 2023, the city recorded a total of 157 homicides, including 9 teenagers aged 15-17 killed by violence. The previous year saw 168 homicides, with one fewer teenager killed. As of now, no arrests have been made in either case.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation. They can contact the Sheriff’s Office or provide information anonymously through First Coast Crime Stoppers.
The recent violence in Jacksonville, Florida underscores the urgent need for community action and support to address the underlying issues contributing to these tragic incidents.
