LOS ANGELES, California – Two individuals were fatally shot and several others were injured at a New Year’s Eve party in downtown Los Angeles. The shooting occurred at approximately 1 a.m. on the intersection of South Santa Fe Avenue and Porter Street, as reported by the Los Angeles Police Department. The victims were attending an underground New Year’s Eve celebration when a fight erupted, resulting in the shooting. Surveillance footage from the area shows multiple partygoers running for cover as gunshots rang out.
The two individuals killed in the shooting have been identified as 24-year-old Deven Whitaker of L.A. and 26-year-old Miah Ladelle Banks of Azusa. Additionally, eight other people sustained injuries. Despite the extensive gunfire, no arrests have yet been made and investigators have not determined the number of suspects involved.
In response to the deadly shooting, Mayor Karen Bass expressed her condolences and emphasized the city’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its residents. She stated, “Eliminating gun violence in our communities remains a top priority of my administration,” and outlined plans to meet with survivors, community leaders, and interventionists to address proactive ways to ensure the safety of all Angelenos.
