Greenwood Park Mall Shooting Victims File Lawsuit Against Simon Property Group and Allied Universal Event Services

Indianapolis, Indiana – Several victims of the Greenwood Park Mall mass shooting have taken legal action as they filed a lawsuit in Marion Superior Court against Simon Property Group and Allied Universal Event Services.

The lawsuit alleges that the defendants, who were responsible for providing security services for the mall, failed to take reasonable steps to prevent the tragic mass shooting that occurred on July 17, 2022. Among the plaintiffs are two sisters, Kaya Stewart and a minor referred to as “O.S.,” along with their mother, Eumeka “Meka” Stewart, and husband and father Samuel Stewart III.

Kaya Stewart sustained life-threatening injuries after being shot multiple times, while O.S. narrowly escaped harm as the bullets missed her, hitting the packages she was carrying. Eumeka “Meka” Stewart was forced to flee in the opposite direction of the food court as chaos erupted in the mall.

The lawsuit claims that the incident could have been prevented if the mall’s security measures, such as properly monitoring the food court and staffing the video feeds throughout the parking lot, were in place. The assailant went unnoticed as he entered the mall and spent over an hour assembling weapons, with no security personnel present in the men’s restroom where he was.

The plaintiffs are represented by attorneys from the law firm of Cohen & Malad, LLP, Indianapolis. The legal action sheds light on the need for improved security measures and protocols in public spaces, especially in light of the increasing frequency of mass shootings across the country.
