Fatal Fentanyl: Wichita Man Sentenced to 18 Years for Son’s Overdose Death

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Wichita man has been sentenced to 18 years and three months in prison in connection to the death of his 22-month-old son from fentanyl ingestion.

Calvin Vick, 26, was sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty to distribution of a controlled substance causing great bodily harm or death, aggravated endangering a child and distribution of a controlled substance. The child, Israel Luna-Vick, was found unresponsive in an apartment and later died at a Wichita hospital on June 22, 2022.

Court documents revealed that Vick’s sister, who lived in the same apartment, found Israel on the floor near a rolled-up blanket and an infant toy. She assumed the child was asleep, but later saw Vick run out of the room holding Israel, saying he was not breathing.

Detectives said that Vick left the hospital before providing a statement to them, and later found fentanyl tablets underneath the child’s sleeping area in their apartment. An autopsy showed that Israel had ingested methamphetamine and fentanyl, which led to his death.

Vick’s actions resulted in a tragic loss, and the sentencing serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of drug distribution and endangering the lives of children. The court’s decision sends a message about the responsibility of adults in protecting the well-being of young individuals.
