Warning: U.S. State Department Advises Against Using Dating Apps While Traveling in Colombia

MEDELLIN, Colombia – The U.S. State Department has issued a warning about the dangers of using dating apps in Colombia after a series of suspicious deaths and incidents involving American citizens. According to the State Department, criminals have been using dating apps to lure victims to meet in public places where they are then assaulted and robbed. The warning comes after the deaths of eight U.S. citizens in Medellin, Colombia, over the final months of 2023, some of which were linked to the use of online dating apps.

While the U.S. Embassy in Colombia has noted an increase in these types of incidents, they believe that many cases go unreported due to victims feeling embarrassed or not wanting to follow through with the judicial process. The Tourism Observatory of the District Personnel of Medellin reported a 200% increase in thefts against foreign visitors and a 29% increase in violent deaths of foreign visitors, most of whom were U.S. citizens.

As a result, the State Department has Colombia listed under a Level 3 “reconsider travel” advisory due to the level of violent crime and terrorism in certain parts of the country. The advisory also included tips for those who plan to travel to Colombia and potentially use dating apps, such as meeting only in public places, informing a friend or family member of plans, and avoiding isolated locations where crimes are more likely to occur.

With the increase in criminal activity targeting foreign visitors, it is important for travelers to remain vigilant and take precautions when using dating apps in Colombia. The State Department’s warning serves as a reminder for Americans to prioritize their safety and be aware of the potential risks associated with meeting strangers through dating apps while traveling abroad.
