Tragic Shooting at Dance Studio Sparks Creation of Generous Legacy Fund

ALHAMBRA, Calif. – My My Nhan was a woman who loved fashion, family, and dance. After moving to Southern California from Vietnam in the 1980s, she dedicated many years to caring for her mother, all the while harboring a deep passion for fashion and dance.

Nhan’s niece, Fonda Quan, shared that her aunt fell in love with ballroom dancing due to its flashy fashion and sparkly sequences. For over two decades, Nhan danced every weekend at the Lai Lai Ballroom in Alhambra and the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park. Tragically, on the night of January 21, 2023, what was supposed to be a joyous evening of dancing turned into a nightmare.

As Nhan was preparing to leave the dance studio with her partner, a shooter approached her car and fatally shot her multiple times. Nhan was one of 11 individuals who lost their lives in a mass shooting, while nine others were injured. The shocking incident left the community reeling with grief and disbelief.

In the midst of their mourning, Nhan’s family made a remarkable discovery as they cleaned out her room. They found that Nhan had secretly made numerous donations to support seniors and youth in her community. This revelation inspired the family to establish the My My Nhan legacy fund on what would have been her 66th birthday. Their aim was to continue Nhan’s acts of kindness and generosity by investing in programs for seniors and youth.

The family has already organized self-defense classes for seniors and awarded college scholarships to three high school seniors, all in honor of Nhan’s legacy. In the face of their profound loss, Nhan’s loved ones are determined to keep her spirit alive and to carry on her legacy of compassion and giving.

If you are interested in contributing to the legacy fund, more information can be found on their website. Nhan’s family is steadfast in their commitment to honoring and extending her benevolent legacy for as long as they can.
