Sword murderer sentenced to 10 years in Las Cruces prison

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Arturo Francisco Quintana, convicted of second-degree murder for the death of Efren Gutierrez in 2020, was sentenced to prison for using a sword to kill another man. Las Cruces Police officers responded to a domestic disturbance at 1101 E. Boutz on June 10 where Quintana was witnessed swinging a large sword in the parking lot of the apartment complex. According to witnesses, a neighbor heard yelling coming from Gutierrez’s apartment, and when several neighbors went inside, they found Gutierrez on his bed with his throat slit. When Quintana left Gutierrez’s apartment, he indicated to neighbors that he “had to do it.” Quintana left the scene on a BMX bike and was later taken into custody. He was given a pre-sentence confinement credit for 1,331 days in court and will serve 10 years in the Department of Corrections.
