Nightclub attacker jailed for 9 months after leaving victim with 9-inch neck scar

Arbroath, Scotland – Marie Huggan, a 44-year-old woman, has been sentenced to nine months in jail for assaulting Jeanette Irvine at De Vito’s nightclub, leaving her with a nine-inch scar across her neck. The incident occurred on July 10, 2022, when Huggan struck Irvine on the head with a bottle during a dancefloor brawl.

The assault resulted in significant physical and psychological harm to the victim. Huggan also knocked another woman to the ground and punched her multiple times. Despite her status as a mother to three young children, Huggan was denied a community-based sentence by Sheriff Paul Brown, who emphasized the severity of the situation and the lasting impact on the victim.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Huggan lashed out after a conversation near the bar, yelling “Do you know who I am?” before smashing a bottle over Irvine’s head and subsequently assaulting the second victim. The severity of Irvine’s injuries led to the involvement of ambulance staff and law enforcement.

As a result of the attack, Irvine experienced trauma and now grapples with the emotional toll of the permanent disfigurement caused by Huggan’s actions. The severity of the assault led to Huggan’s arrest, and she eventually admitted to assaulting both Irvine and the other woman involved in the altercation.

Despite Huggan expressing remorse for her actions, the court deemed a custodial sentence as the only viable option, given the significant harm and trauma inflicted on the victims. Huggan’s defense attorney, Keith Sim, acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating that Huggan recognizes the extent of the trauma she caused.

The incident at De Vito’s nightclub serves as a reminder of the real and lasting impact of assaults on innocent individuals, and the sentencing of Huggan emphasizes the legal consequences of such actions.
