HARLINGEN, Texas – First responders in the Rio Grande Valley are facing a surge in fentanyl-related overdose calls, with authorities reporting 12 overdoses and eight fatalities in Cameron County since last week.
Cameron County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Alvaro Guerra stated that while fentanyl has been present in other areas, its emergence in the Valley is a new challenge for law enforcement. Despite previous training on handling such situations, the recent increase in overdoses has prompted a rapid response from first responders.
Authorities are currently collaborating across multiple law enforcement agencies to locate the source of the lethal drugs and the specific batch responsible for the overdoses. The sheriff’s office is actively investigating three separate overdose cases that are believed to be linked to fentanyl.
Dr. James Castillo, Cameron County Public Health Authority, emphasized the potency of fentanyl, describing it as a highly potent opioid, estimated to be 100 times stronger than morphine. One of the major dangers associated with fentanyl is its frequent inclusion into other drugs, unbeknownst to the users, leading to unforeseen and fatal consequences.
According to Castillo, an overdose on fentanyl can induce profound sedation, resulting in a person’s inability to breathe adequately to stay alive. This explains why individuals who consume drugs unknowingly laced with fentanyl face an elevated risk of overdose and death.
The urgency of addressing the fentanyl outbreak in Cameron County is underscored by the high fatality rate of the recent overdoses.
