Sterling, Virginia – The investigation into the tragic house explosion on Feb. 16 in Sterling that resulted in the loss of a volunteer firefighter’s life has revealed a leaking 500-gallon propane tank as the probable cause, according to the Loudoun County Fire Marshal’s Office. The underground tank leak led to the uncontained propane spreading into the structure and its surroundings, eventually igniting due to an unknown source.
Loudoun County Fire and Rescue disclosed that the on-site investigation has been completed, but the broader inquiry remains active. Following the explosion on Silver Ridge Drive at 8:24 p.m., 14 individuals were injured, with one fatality reported, identified as Sterling Volunteer Firefighter Trevor Brown from the Sterling Volunteer Fire Company. Subsequently, only one firefighter remained in stable condition at the burn unit of MedStar Washington Hospital Center as of Friday.
The aftermath of the explosion extended beyond the initial property, impacting at least six additional residential structures, three of which were deemed unfit for continued occupancy. The damage is estimated to cost approximately $2.5 million, as stated in the report.
