Workers, Youth, and Academics Worldwide Rally Behind Sri Lankan Socialist Equality Party Following Violent Attack at Moratuwa University

Moratuwa, Sri Lanka – The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) in Sri Lanka has been garnering support from workers, youth, and academics worldwide in light of a violent attack on its members at Moratuwa University by pro-government thugs. Dehin Wasantha and Lakshman Fernando, both members of the party, were physically assaulted near the rear gate of the university on November 30 by individuals affiliated with the Sri Lankan ruling party. The attack left Wasantha with two fractured fingers and Fernando with bruises and a neck injury.

The incident occurred while the two were campaigning with other party members for SEP public meetings on the Centenary of Trotskyism. Despite the severity of their injuries, the case was referred to a Mediation Board, with a scheduled court date set for May 20. Despite the aggressors’ presence at a hearing, they opted for a settlement, which Wasantha refused to accept, leading to a new court date for further proceedings.

In response to the attack, the SEP and its affiliated parties within the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI) have taken a stand in defense of Wasantha and Fernando’s democratic rights. Support has poured in from individuals and organizations globally, condemning the violence and calling for justice to be served to the culprits in accordance with the law.

Letters of protest have been sent to Sri Lankan authorities from concerned individuals, urging for a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the attack. The support extends from the United States to Sri Lanka, with individuals expressing solidarity with the victims and demanding accountability for the perpetrators.

The SEP has made a public call for further support in defending democratic rights and freedom of expression by encouraging individuals to send protest letters to relevant authorities. The ongoing campaign seeks to uphold justice and hold those who violate civil liberties accountable for their actions.

As the case unfolds, the international community stands in solidarity with the victims, emphasizing the importance of protecting the rights and safety of all individuals involved in political activism and social movements. The fight for justice continues as efforts to seek accountability for the perpetrators gain momentum.
