Chicago, Illinois – Emonte Morgan has been found guilty of the 2021 murder of Chicago Police Officer Ella French and the attempted murder of two other officers. The verdict was reached after a jury of seven men and five women deliberated for 3.5 hours, delivering their decision shortly before 7:30 p.m.
French’s mother, Elizabeth, along with her daughter’s colleagues, was present to hear the verdict being read. Emonte Morgan, 23 years old, remained emotionless as he was convicted on all counts, including first-degree murder for French’s death and two counts of attempted first-degree murder for injuring the other officers.
Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx expressed gratitude for the jury’s decision but also underscored the tragic loss of a police officer who dedicated her life to serving the people of Cook County. The shooting took place during a traffic stop in Englewood, where Morgan, armed with a gun, engaged in a scuffle with the officers.
During the trial, graphic body camera footage was shown to the jury, depicting the chaotic and violent events that unfolded during the traffic stop. French’s partner, Officer Carlos YaƱez, who was also injured in the altercation, provided emotional testimony about the incident.
Emotions ran high throughout the trial, with tearful testimonies from family members and colleagues of the slain officer. The defense argued that Morgan’s actions were not premeditated and that the shooting was a result of a struggle during which the gun was discharged accidentally.
As the trial came to an end, both the prosecution and defense rested their cases, with the defense choosing not to have Morgan testify on his own behalf. The jury deliberated and heard closing arguments, ultimately holding Morgan accountable for the tragic events that led to Officer French’s death.
The sentencing phase is pending, with Morgan facing a possible life sentence for his crimes. The legal proceedings are set to continue with post-trial motions scheduled for April 19. The outcome of these motions will determine the next steps in the legal process as justice is sought for the fallen officer and her colleagues.
