Mass Shooting in Barrhaven Leaves Six Dead, Police Rule Out Intimate Partner Violence

OTTAWA, Ontario – A tragic mass shooting took the lives of six individuals, including four children and two adults, in a townhouse located in the Barrhaven suburb late Wednesday night.

Reports to 911 began around 10:50 p.m., leading emergency responders to Berrigan Drive near Palmadeo Drive, a residential area in close proximity to two schools. Upon arrival, responders discovered six individuals deceased and one person injured, who was promptly transported to a nearby hospital.

The identities of the deceased victims have not been officially confirmed as the authorities continue their investigation. A male suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was apprehended at the scene, approximately 15 kilometers south of Ottawa’s downtown area. The Ottawa police assured the public that there is no ongoing risk to public safety.

Regarding the relationship between the victims and the suspect, Ottawa’s police Chief Eric Stubbs refrained from providing specific details during an interview with CBC Radio’s Ottawa Morning. He mentioned that investigators do not believe it to be a case of intimate partner violence. Stubbs expressed the tragic nature of the incident and its impact on Ottawa, urging the community to seek support in coping with the aftermath.

In reaction to the devastating news, Barrhaven resident David Brose visited the scene, expressing shock and disbelief over the heartbreaking events that unfolded. Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe described the incident as one of the most violent in the city’s history, emphasizing the profound impact it has had on the community.

Councilor Wilson Lo, who represents the area, shared his sadness over the tragic loss of six Barrhaven residents, offering condolences to their families and neighbors. Meanwhile, the coroner and forensic investigators in protective gear were seen at the scene, preparing to enter the townhouse for further examination. Property records indicate joint ownership of the residence since 2013 as more details continue to emerge.
