Tragedy: Ottawa Police Identify Family of Newcomers from Sri Lanka Killed in Barrhaven Massacre

Ottawa, Ontario – A tragic incident has shocked the residents of Ottawa as six individuals, including an infant, were found dead in a suburb of Ottawa. The Ottawa Police Service responded to a home in the 300 block of Berrigan Drive following multiple 911 calls on Wednesday, March 6. Upon arrival, they discovered a man outside the residence in critical condition, who was then transported to the hospital for treatment.

Inside the home, the bodies of his wife, four children, and an acquaintance were discovered. The victims have been identified as Darshani Banbaranayake Hama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake, Inuka Wickramasinghe, Ashwini Wickramasinghe, Rinyana Wickramasinghe, Kelly Wickramasinghe, and Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gamini Amarakoon.

The suspect, Febrio De-Zoysa, 19, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. Investigators revealed that De-Zoysa was a student and an acquaintance of the family residing in the home at the time of the incident.

Following the tragic events, Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe expressed his devastation at the loss, emphasizing that there is no risk to the public in the wake of this senseless act of violence. Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also extended their condolences to the victims’ families and the Ottawa community.

The Ottawa Catholic District School Board offered support to those in need, urging anyone requiring assistance to reach out. In an effort to provide resources and aid to those affected by the tragedy, Ottawa Public Health also encouraged individuals to access support services on their website.
