Suspect in NYC Subway Attack Previously Convicted for Stabbing and Threatening Child: Police

NEW YORK, NY – A harrowing incident at the Fulton Street subway station in Lower Manhattan has left a 29-year-old woman fighting for her life after being pushed onto the tracks by her boyfriend, resulting in both of her feet being severed by an incoming train. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Christian Valdez, has a troubling criminal history that includes a violent 2017 home invasion, where he stabbed a woman and threatened to harm her young daughter.

According to authorities, Valdez was arrested on Saturday after the disturbing domestic violence attack at the subway station. He has been charged with attempted murder and felony assault for pushing his girlfriend onto the tracks during an argument. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was struck by a southbound train and was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition, although both of her feet had to be amputated as a result of the incident.

This is not the first time Valdez has been involved in a violent crime. In 2017, he broke into an apartment in the Bronx, where he brutally attacked a woman and tried to throw her 3-year-old daughter off a fire escape. The mother managed to escape onto the fire escape with her child, but Valdez pursued them, assaulting her with a glass bottle and threatening to harm the little girl. Fortunately, neighbors intervened and saved the child from further harm.

Valdez was convicted in 2020 for the Bronx attack and sentenced to eight years in prison. He was released on parole in January 2023, only to commit another heinous act less than a year later. The suspect’s disturbing pattern of violence raises questions about the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in rehabilitating offenders and keeping the public safe from repeat offenders like Valdez.

As the investigation into the subway station incident continues, authorities are working to piece together the events that led to such a tragic outcome. The community is left shaken by the senseless act of violence, and questions remain about what could have been done to prevent this tragedy. For now, the victim is recovering in the hospital, while Valdez awaits arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court, facing serious charges for his actions.
