Explosions at Clinton Township Vape Facility Prompt Delay in Investigation Until April Start

Clinton Township, Michigan – An investigation into a recent fire and series of explosions at a vape supply facility in Clinton Township has been delayed until early April to allow for coordination between multiple agencies and the need for large equipment at the site.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will lead the public investigation, working together with the Clinton Township fire investigation team, the Clinton Township police department, and the Michigan State Police, according to Clinton Township Fire Chief Tim Duncan. Private parties involved, such as the building’s owners and insurers, will also participate in the investigation.

The incident, which occurred at a facility known as Select Distributors and Goo Smoke Shop on 15 Mile Road on March 4th, resulted in explosions that sent debris, including canisters of butane and nitrous oxide, up to two miles away from the scene. Tragically, a 19-year-old individual was struck and killed by the flying debris, while a firefighter sustained minor injuries from the blasts.

Once the site had cooled sufficiently by Monday, investigators were able to briefly approach it to assess the situation. However, the investigation process will involve moving heavy equipment to handle large structural pieces of steel and sift through debris piled four to five feet high.

As specialists from various parties involved are invited to participate in the investigation, including mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, structural engineers, and fire suppression specialists, the anticipated start date for the investigation is set for the first week of April. Investigators hope to determine the cause of the explosion and fire within a couple of days once the investigation commences.

Despite progress, the scene remains dangerous, with caution advised for anyone near the area. Duncan emphasized the importance of contacting law enforcement if any debris is found, as some containers may still be full and potentially hazardous.

In conclusion, while the investigation into the Clinton Township vape supply facility incident is set to begin in early April, the process may be lengthy and complex due to the scale of the damage and the involvement of multiple agencies and specialists. The goal is to determine the cause of the fire and explosions that occurred earlier this month, shedding light on the tragic events that unfolded in the community.
