Attack: Homeless Man Arrested for Felony Battery and Hate Crime in Folsom

FOLSOM, California – A homeless man was arrested this week in Historic Folsom for felony battery and a hate crime after attacking a Black woman. Folsom police first apprehended Mamikon Shushanyan for a misdemeanor, but he was released due to California law constraints. However, after discovering the extent of the woman’s injuries and the racial slurs hurled by Shushanyan, he was re-arrested for felony battery.

Surveillance footage from the Sutter Parking Garage captured the brutal assault, where Shushanyan violently pushed, kicked, and punched the victim. The incident sparked concern among local residents, with one witness noting the rising presence of homeless individuals in the area.

While it is unclear if Shushanyan was experiencing a mental health episode, witnesses reported him shouting racial slurs prior to the attack. A good Samaritan intervened to restrain Shushanyan until authorities arrived, highlighting the complex challenges faced by individuals with mental health issues among the homeless population.

Advocates for the homeless in Sacramento emphasized the need for accessible mental health treatment for those living on the streets. Despite efforts to provide support, instances like the one involving Shushanyan underscore the ongoing struggle to address mental health issues within the homeless community. Homelessness does not equate to mental illness, as noted by community members who interact regularly with those living on the streets.

Folsom police disclosed that while Shushanyan’s recent arrest was his first, they had received prior reports of disturbances involving him. He is currently detained at the Sacramento County Jail, awaiting legal proceedings for his alleged crimes.
