Arrest Made in Connection to 2023 Shooting that Killed 22-Year-Old in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – A 23-year-old man has been arrested by the Salt Lake City Police Department in connection to a fatal shooting that took the life of 22-year-old Halapaini Moala back in 2023. Molitoni Vainuku, the suspect, was taken into custody and booked on a charge of murder, as confirmed by SLCPD.

The arrest came after detectives from the Gang Unit received information about Vainuku in West Valley City on March 22. Working closely with the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and SWAT, authorities acted swiftly due to concerns that the suspect had access to firearms.

Following an extensive investigation that began on June 4, 2023, after the fatal shooting on West Market Street, SLCPD’s Gang Unit and Homicide Squad collaborated to identify the perpetrator. Various crime suppression patrols were initiated, and a criminal investigation was launched into the nightclub where the incident occurred.

Police Chief Mike Brown emphasized the significance of the arrest, noting that it marks a milestone for the Gang Unit and Homicide Squad, ultimately enhancing public safety within the city.
