Explosion on Nieuw Amsterdam Ship Claims Lives of Two Workers due to Boiler Failure

An explosion on board the Nieuw Amsterdam ship tragically resulted in the deaths of two Holland America cruise ship workers, engineer Joseph Terrado, and wiper Wawan Gusnawan. The incident occurred in an engineering space while the boat was anchored at Half Moon Cay near the Bahamas.

Maritime attorney Jim Walker revealed that the explosion in the engine room led to the release of steam which ultimately caused the deaths of the two workers. The catastrophic event occurred around 9 am on a Friday morning. Passenger Laine Doss recounted how the captain broke the news to passengers, creating a somber atmosphere onboard.

Terrado and Gusnawan were fatally trapped inside the space following the explosion, as they were not equipped with breathing devices and could not manually open the hydraulic doors. The lack of oxygen and hot steam overwhelmed them, leading to their tragic deaths. The maritime lawyer explained that the malfunctioned piece of equipment was the thermal expansion joint within the compensator.

Holland America expressed deep sadness over the incident, emphasizing that the safety and welfare of all guests and crew are their top priority. The cruise line is offering counseling services to those affected by the tragedy. The Nieuw Amsterdam, which set sail from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on a seven-night voyage, is currently being investigated for the cause of the explosion.

As authorities continue their investigation, the families of the deceased workers are in the thoughts and prayers of the Holland America team. The company is committed to understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragic event and ensuring the well-being of everyone affected by the incident.
