Sea Turtle Meat Linked to Fatal Poisoning Outbreak in Zanzibar

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – In a tragic incident reported over the weekend, several individuals in Pemba Island of the Zanzibar archipelago succumbed to illness or death after consuming sea turtle meat. The local authorities shared that eight children and one adult lost their lives, while 78 others required hospitalization. Sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy by the residents of Zanzibar, with the deaths believed to be linked to chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning.

Dr. Haji Bakari, the medical officer of the Mkoani District, confirmed that the adult victim, who passed away on Friday, was the parent of one of the deceased children. The tragic consumption of turtle meat took place on a Tuesday, leading to this devastating outcome. Laboratory tests confirmed that sea turtle meat was indeed the cause of the victims’ ailments.

Following this unfortunate event, a disaster management team led by Hamza Hassan Juma was dispatched to Pemba Island. Juma urged the local population to refrain from consuming sea turtles to avoid such calamities in the future. This is not the first instance of such an incident in the region, as in November 2021, seven individuals, including a 3-year-old, lost their lives in a similar circumstance, with three others needing medical attention.

The dangerous effects of consuming sea turtle meat have once again manifested on Pemba Island, emphasizing the critical need for awareness and caution among the residents. The regional authorities are working diligently to educate the public on the risks associated with consuming such wildlife products to prevent further tragedies. The impact of chelonitoxism serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of food safety and responsible consumption practices, especially when it comes to endangered species like sea turtles.
