ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – Authorities in Zanzibar reported multiple fatalities and hospitalizations linked to the consumption of sea turtle meat on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago. At least eight children and one adult have died, with 78 others hospitalized after consuming the delicacy. The tragic incident is suspected to be a result of chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning that occurs from eating sea turtle meat.
Dr. Haji Bakari, the medical officer in the Mkoani District, confirmed that all victims had eaten sea turtle meat, leading to the fatal outcomes. The adult who passed away was the parent of one of the deceased children. The consumption of the contaminated turtle meat took place on a Tuesday, with the devastating consequences unfolding in the days that followed.
This is not the first incident of its kind in the region. In November 2021, seven individuals, including a 3-year-old child, died on Pemba Island after consuming sea turtle meat. In response to these tragic events, a disaster management team, led by Hamza Hassan Juma, has been dispatched to advise against the consumption of sea turtles in Zanzibar.
The authorities urge caution and are working to prevent further incidents by educating the public on the dangers associated with consuming sea turtle meat. The local population’s preference for sea turtle meat has resulted in repeated cases of food poisoning, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and enforcement of regulations to protect public health.
As investigations continue into the recent fatalities and illnesses caused by eating sea turtle meat, officials stress the importance of avoiding such items to prevent future tragedies. The community in Zanzibar and beyond must recognize the risks involved in consuming wildlife products and take steps to safeguard against potential health hazards.
