Alert: Multiple Suspected Overdose Deaths in Waterloo Region Spur Community Warning

Kitchener, Ontario – The Waterloo Region Integrated Drug Strategy issued a community drug alert following a series of tragic deaths within a week. Three individuals lost their lives to suspected drug overdoses or poisonings between March 19 and March 26. The alert highlighted the detection of fentanyl mixed with other substances and various new fentanyl analogues by the Kitchener CTS Drug Checking Program.

These fentanyl analogues are potent opioids that pose a significant risk of overdose or drug poisoning, potentially requiring higher doses of naloxone to revive individuals. Additionally, the program discovered two types of animal tranquilizers, Medetomidine/dexmedetomidine and Xylazine, along with Bromazolam, a potent benzodiazepine-related drug that cannot be reversed with naloxone.

While a direct link between these substances and the recent deaths remains unclear, the Waterloo Region Integrated Drug Strategy urged the public to remain vigilant. This community drug alert marks the first since late January and serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks associated with substance use.

In the event of an overdose, it is advised to call 911, administer naloxone in cases of suspected opioid poisoning, perform rescue breathing and chest compressions, avoid giving any other substances as it may exacerbate the situation, and continue administering naloxone until paramedics arrive. It is crucial to place the affected individual in the recovery position if they must be left unattended.

For individuals using drugs, the alert serves as a precautionary measure to exercise caution and seek help or resources if needed. This proactive approach aims to prevent further tragedies and ensure the safety and well-being of the community amidst the current drug-related challenges faced by the region.
