Shooting Victim Files Lawsuit Against Killer for Emotional Distress and Psychological Harm

Hebron, New York – Blake Walsh has filed a civil lawsuit in Washington County Supreme Court, claiming emotional distress and psychological harm after a fatal shooting incident involving Kevin Monahan. The incident took place when Walsh’s vehicle, along with two others, accidentally entered Monahan’s rural property in Hebron. Tragically, 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis was shot and killed during the encounter.

According to sheriff’s officials, Monahan fired two shots at the vehicle as it was leaving his property, hitting Gillis in the neck. Walsh had to drive several miles away to get cell reception and call 911 after the shooting. Gillis, a recent graduate of Schuylerville High School, succumbed to her injuries.

In February 2024, a jury in Washington County found Monahan guilty of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and reckless endangerment. He received a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. Walsh’s lawsuit alleges that Monahan acted carelessly, negligently, and recklessly when he opened fire on the vehicles.

The lawsuit also places blame on Monahan’s wife, Jinx, stating that she was aware of her husband’s history of aggressive behavior in stressful situations. Despite this knowledge, the lawsuit claims that she kept unsecured firearms in the home, including a 20-gauge shotgun. Walsh is seeking compensatory and punitive damages in the lawsuit.

Gillis’ father, Andrew Gillis, has filed a separate wrongful death lawsuit against Monahan, seeking damages of at least $5 million. The lawsuits shed light on the tragic incident that resulted in the loss of a young life and the legal repercussions faced by those involved. The community continues to mourn the loss of Kaylin Gillis and seek justice for her untimely death.
