Tanzania: Deaths Linked to Consuming Sea Turtle Meat Point to Chelonitoxism Outbreak

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – A tragic incident unfolded on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago when several individuals either passed away or fell ill after consuming sea turtle meat, authorities revealed over the weekend. A total of eight children and one adult lost their lives, with an additional 78 individuals requiring hospitalization.

Sea turtle meat is considered a delicacy among the people of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania. The unfortunate deaths were attributed to chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning resulting from the consumption of turtle meat. Dr. Haji Bakari, the medical officer of the Mkoani District, disclosed that the adult victim who succumbed on Friday was the parent of one of the deceased children, adding that the fatal consumption occurred on a Tuesday.

Laboratory analyses confirmed that all the victims had ingested sea turtle meat, Bakari informed The Associated Press. In response to the tragic events, authorities in Zanzibar mobilized a disaster management team under the leadership of Hamza Hassan Juma, who issued a cautionary message urging individuals to refrain from consuming sea turtles.

This heartbreaking incident is not the first of its kind on Pemba Island, as a similar tragedy occurred in November 2021 when seven individuals, including a 3-year-old child, perished after consuming turtle meat, resulting in hospitalization for three others. The recurring incidents have prompted calls for heightened awareness and caution regarding the consumption of sea turtles within the region.
