Furious: Fergus Ewing’s Concerns Over A9 Dualling Pledge

In Edinburgh, Scotland, SNP MSP Fergus Ewing has voiced his frustrations regarding the delays in the A9 dualling project. Following a series of deadly accidents along the A9 route in March, Ewing penned a letter to Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop, expressing his concerns about the project’s progress.

The month of March proved to be particularly tragic on the A9, with multiple fatalities and injuries from various accidents. These incidents left grieving families in their wake, highlighting the urgent need for improvements to the road.

Ewing pointed out his apprehensions to Hyslop that the Scottish Government may backtrack on its commitment to completing the A9 programme by 2035. He questioned the reliability of the recent announcement of the new A9 programme, citing worries that funding issues could impede its progress.

One of Ewing’s main grievances was the conditional nature of the government’s pledge to dual certain sections of the A9 before others. He emphasized the importance of securing adequate funds for the project to ensure its timely completion and avoid further delays.

The MSP urged Hyslop to reconsider the caveats attached to the A9 dualling plan, emphasizing the need for a more solid commitment backed by sufficient capital resources. Ewing highlighted the significant funding available for infrastructure projects over the next decade, stressing that the A9 dualling costs should be well within reach.

Hyslop acknowledged the challenges ahead but remained optimistic about the project’s ambitious timeline. While she did not guarantee meeting the 2035 deadline, she assured that the government had detailed plans in place to benefit the Highlands communities.

Ewing’s letter underscores the growing frustrations and concerns surrounding the A9 dualling project, urging the government to prioritize the safety and well-being of all road users. As discussions continue, stakeholders will be closely monitoring developments to ensure the project’s successful completion without further delays.
