Gunman Accused of Killing NYPD Officer on Long Island Held Without Bail

Far Rockaway, Queens – The man accused of fatally shooting an NYPD officer from Long Island during a traffic stop faced charges during his arraignment on Thursday. Guy Rivera, 34, of Woodside, Queens, was held without bail on first-degree murder and other charges, including allegations that he tried to shoot another officer during the encounter.

Rivera, who has been hospitalized since the incident, was ordered remanded by the Queens District Attorney’s office. He is expected to appear in court again on Friday. Rivera faces multiple counts, including first and second-degree murder, as well as criminal possession of a weapon charges in the killing of NYPD Officer Jonathan E. Diller, 31, of Massapequa Park.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz emphasized the tragedy of the situation, stating that Officer Diller, a father, husband, and son, was killed for simply doing his job. The prosecutor also noted that Rivera fired at another officer during the encounter, but his gun jammed. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Meanwhile, Governor Kathy Hochul directed flags to be flown at half-staff to honor Officer Diller, who dedicated his life to public safety.
