Kansas City, Missouri – A tragic shooting took place at the end of a parade celebrating the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory. The incident resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, including several children.
According to Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves, 23 individuals were shot, with one person succumbing to their injuries. The deceased victim was identified as Kansas City disc jockey Lisa Lopez-Galvan.
Authorities stated that the shooting stemmed from a dispute among several individuals and ruled out any connections to terrorism or domestic extremism. While the investigation is ongoing, police recovered multiple firearms from the scene and have detained two juveniles in connection to the incident.
The victims of the shooting ranged in age from 8 to 47, with a significant number under 16 years old, as reported by Chief Graves. Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City confirmed that they received 12 patients from the rally, with nine of them being children between the ages of 6 and 15. Fortunately, all patients admitted to the hospital are expected to recover.
University Health hospital in Kansas City also treated eight gunshot victims, with five of them already being discharged. Kansas City Chiefs confirmed the safety of all players, coaches, and staff following the tragic event.
President Joe Biden expressed his condolences regarding the shooting, emphasizing the unity typically associated with Super Bowl celebrations. Chiefs players, including Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, shared heartfelt messages on social media, expressing their grief over the incident.
The NFL released a statement mourning the senseless shooting and commending the swift response of law enforcement and emergency personnel. Missouri Governor Mike Parson and the First Lady were present at the parade but were unharmed during the shooting.
As investigations continue, both Kansas City police and the FBI have requested any video evidence relating to the incident to aid in their inquiries. The community mourns the loss and stands in solidarity with those impacted by the tragic event.
