Stabbing in Bronx Elevator: Paroled Man Attacks 75-Year-Old Woman

Fordham, The Bronx – A man convicted of the unprovoked stabbing of a 75-year-old woman in a Bronx elevator was out on parole at the time of the brutal attack. Edwin Rios, 38, allegedly followed his victim into the elevator of her apartment building on Sunday morning, where he repeatedly stabbed her in the hands and head. The attack, deemed random, left the victim, Zenona Ramos, in critical condition.

Ramos recounted the terrifying ordeal, noting that she pleaded with the suspect to spare her life as he continued to inflict harm. The victim, now stable at St. Barnabas Hospital, required 40 stitches in one hand alone to close the wounds. Her daughter, Mirian Ramos Garcia, expressed anger towards the system, questioning why someone with a violent history like Rios was released on parole.

This incident is not Rios’ first encounter with the law regarding violent crimes. In a previous case, he was charged with attempted murder after attacking a 22-year-old woman in Queens back in 2012. Released on parole last August, his parole term was scheduled to end in June. The victim’s family is left devastated by the attack, with Ramos Garcia labeling the perpetrator as a “devil.”

Rios has since been charged with attempted murder in this most recent Bronx attack. The community, reeling from the shocking incident, stands in solidarity with the victim and her family as they seek justice and understanding in the aftermath of this senseless act of violence. As Ramos continues her recovery, authorities are working to ensure the safety and well-being of Bronx residents.
