Richmond, Virginia – A K-9 officer in Virginia tragically lost his life while heroically protecting a correctional officer from a violent attack involving suspected gang members. The 5-year-old Belgian Malinois, named Rivan, succumbed to injuries sustained during the incident, despite attempts to save his life.
The Virginia Department of Corrections reported that three inmates affiliated with the MS-13 gang assaulted another inmate at the Sussex I State Prison, with a fourth inmate overseeing the attack. Corrections Officer Kharmishia Phillip Fields and Rivan, her K-9 partner, swiftly responded to stop the assault and defend the individuals involved.
Rivan’s courageous actions undoubtedly saved lives, as Officer Phillip Fields emerged unharmed from the encounter. The department commended Rivan’s dedication and sacrifice, emphasizing that his actions were not in vain.
Although the inmates involved have not been named, it was disclosed that at least three of them had ties to MS-13 and were in the United States illegally at the time of their arrest. Their criminal backgrounds ranged from serious offenses such as first-degree homicide to attempted rape and child exploitation charges.
Virginia Department of Corrections Director Chad Dotson expressed deep sadness over Rivan’s passing, highlighting the significance of his sacrifice in protecting Officer Phillip Fields and the assaulted inmate. Plans are underway for a memorial service to honor Rivan’s service and dedication to his duties.
Governor Glenn Youngkin vowed to hold the perpetrators, described as members of the barbaric MS-13 gang, accountable for their actions. The department affirmed its commitment to pursue legal action against the offenders to the fullest extent allowed by law, as investigations into the incident continue.
