Religious Debate Turns Violent with Man Attacking Non-Believers Outside Florida Convenience Store

Palm Coast, Florida – A discussion about religion outside a convenience store in North Florida took a violent turn when a man reacted aggressively, leading to an attack on two individuals who did not share his beliefs. The incident resulted in one man sustaining multiple stab wounds, while the other was left with facial bruises, as reported by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. Both individuals survived the assault, with one requiring hospitalization, but their current conditions have not been disclosed.

The altercation occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, at a Circle K gas station in Palm Coast, approximately 60 miles south of Jacksonville. Upon the arrival of deputies, one of the victims was found with severe injuries to his neck, back, and side, while the other victim had been repeatedly punched and sustained visible bruises on his back and side.

An investigation revealed that the victims had engaged in a conversation with a man sitting at a picnic table outside the store, identified as 22-year-old Hunter Detherow, which eventually turned into a heated debate about religion. The situation escalated when Detherow became upset, initiating a physical altercation that resulted in one victim being stabbed and the other assaulted with fists. Detherow fled the scene on foot shortly after the incident.

Following an unsuccessful search in the surrounding area, detectives were able to identify Detherow as the suspect, leading to his arrest at his residence in Palm Coast. He was charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and held in jail on a $300,000 bond.

Sheriff Rick Staly emphasized the importance of resolving disagreements through peaceful means, condemning the use of violence in response to differing viewpoints. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of allowing disagreements to escalate into physical altercations, highlighting the need for respectful communication and conflict resolution.
