School District Sued After Student’s Attack on Teacher at Eldorado High School

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – A former Eldorado High School teacher is taking legal action against the Clark County School District, alleging that the district failed to ensure her safety after she was brutally attacked by a student in April 2022. The teacher, identified in court documents as Sade Doe, claims that the district was aware of prior violence at Eldorado and other schools within the district. The lawsuit, filed in Clark County District Court, accuses the district of negligence in providing a safe working environment for teachers.

According to the lawsuit, Sade Doe was assaulted by her student, Jonathan Eluterio Martinez Garcia, during mandatory after-school office hours. Despite policies in place requiring students to obtain hall passes, Garcia was able to stay on campus after the final bell without permission. The teacher was unaware of Garcia’s violent tendencies, as the school failed to inform her of any concerns raised during a previous conference with his parents.

The attack left the teacher severely injured, with physical and psychological trauma that ultimately led her to leave her teaching position at CCSD. Garcia, who was charged as an adult, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, attempted sexual assault, and battery with a deadly weapon resulting in serious bodily harm. He received a 16 to 40-year prison sentence for his crimes.

Following the incident, CCSD implemented new security measures district-wide, investing millions of dollars in upgrades such as panic buttons, single points of entry, fencing, and surveillance cameras. Eldorado High School was one of the first schools to receive these enhancements, with an estimated cost of $26 million.

The lawsuit names the district, former Superintendent Jesus Jara, and Eldorado Principal Christina Brockett as defendants, seeking damages exceeding $50,000 and requesting a jury trial. A district spokesman declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.

The case underscores the importance of school safety and the responsibility of school districts to protect their employees. It raises questions about the adequacy of security measures in place at schools and the need for thorough training and communication regarding potential safety threats. Moving forward, it will be essential for educational institutions to prioritize the safety and well-being of their staff and students to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
