Trump Declares Capitol Riot Convict a ‘Patriot’ in Fundraising Effort

Denver, Colorado – Former President Donald Trump has publicly declared his support for Rebecca Lavrenz, a woman convicted of federal misdemeanor charges related to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump referred to Lavrenz as a “patriot” and shared a link on social media for people to donate towards her legal expenses.

Lavrenz, 71, was recently convicted in Washington of disorderly and disruptive conduct, along with three other charges stemming from her involvement in the Capitol riot. Trump, who has been focusing more on individuals charged with crimes related to the attack, highlighted Lavrenz’s case to his nearly 7 million followers on Truth Social.

According to court documents, Lavrenz admitted to being at the Capitol on January 6, witnessing individuals removing physical barriers to gain entry into the building. Despite speaking with a Capitol police officer inside, Lavrenz eventually left the premises. She now faces possible imprisonment of up to a year and fines exceeding $200,000.

Known on social media as the “J6 Praying Grandma,” Lavrenz has gained attention for her claim of driving across the country to pray for the nation on the day of the “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington. Trump, in his social media post, labeled her as “unfairly targeted” and provided a link to a fundraising website dedicated to her legal defense fund.

Trump’s unwavering support for individuals involved in the Capitol insurrection has stirred controversy, with some Republicans in Congress also expressing sympathy for the rioters. Rep. Elise Stefanik and Sen. Tim Scott, both potential running mates for Trump, have made statements suggesting leniency towards those charged or convicted in relation to January 6.

The former President’s advocacy for pardoning individuals involved in the attack has only intensified in recent months, adding a new layer of division within the Republican party. As Trump solidifies his position as the GOP’s presidential nominee, his stance on the Capitol rioters continues to attract attention and scrutiny.
