Richmond, Indiana – On April 6, 1968, the city of Richmond was struck by a tragic event that forever changed its history. What started as a bustling Saturday afternoon in the downtown area quickly turned into a nightmare when a double explosion caused by a gas leak rocked the city, resulting in the loss of 41 lives and injuring over 150 individuals.
As described by Esther Kellner in her book “Death in a Sunny Street: The Civil Defense Story of the Richmond, Indiana disaster,” the day began as a warm and sunny spring day, with residents going about their usual errands in preparation for the upcoming Easter holiday. The downtown area was bustling with people, and the streets were filled with heavier-than-usual traffic.
The explosion, which occurred just two days after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee, left more than a city block completely leveled. Despite the chaos and devastation, the community of Richmond banded together to rescue those trapped, extinguish fires, and provide aid to the injured and deceased.
In the aftermath of the disaster, a Board of Inquiry was established to investigate the incident. The subsequent blast report, released on May 29, 1968, revealed that the initial explosion’s cause was unknown, but it originated in or near the Marting Arms building on East Main Street. The report suggested that the explosion may have been triggered by a spark igniting natural gas from a leaking pipe, potentially exacerbated by a firing range in the store’s basement.
The total damage caused by the explosion was estimated at over $10 million at the time, equivalent to approximately $90 million in today’s currency. The tragedy not only resulted in significant loss of life but also left a lasting impact on the community of Richmond.
To commemorate the victims of the downtown Richmond explosions, a new monument was unveiled, honoring the memory of those who lost their lives on that fateful day in 1968. Despite the passage of time, the events of April 6, 1968, remain etched in the history of Richmond, serving as a reminder of the resilience and unity that emerged from tragedy.
