Day Care Owner and Staff Honored as Heroes for Saving 16 Children from DC Gas Explosion

Washington, D.C. – The owner and staff of a local day care in Washington, D.C. were commended for their heroic actions in saving 16 children from the aftermath of a gas explosion that rocked the Anacostia neighborhood in January.

During the incident on January 18, a powerful explosion demolished a building housing a convenience store in the 1200 block of Marion Barry Avenue SE. Among the affected structures was the Baby Einstein Child Development Center, where children between 2 months and 4 years old were present at the time.

Owner Regina Snead and her team acted swiftly upon detecting the smell of gas, ensuring the safe evacuation of all children from the premises. For their life-saving efforts, they were recognized by DC Fire leaders and Mayor Muriel Bowser with awards acknowledging their bravery and commitment to child safety.

Reflecting on the harrowing experience, Snead expressed gratitude for the recognition but emphasized that they were simply doing their duty to protect the children under their care.
