Brockton, Massachusetts – A tragic incident unfolded in Brockton, Massachusetts, as a man lost his life after being intentionally struck by an SUV, turning a pedestrian crash into a homicide case. Stuart Smith, 50, succumbed to his injuries after more than 12 hours of fighting for his life, following the alleged deliberate act by Vasco Semedo, 45, who now faces a murder charge.
Reports indicate that the Brockton police received distress calls regarding the pedestrian crash at 65 North Main Street early Saturday morning. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the victim, Smith, unresponsive, lying in front of a Toyota Rav 4. Semedo was being held by individuals present at the scene.
Smith was rushed to Good Samaritan Hospital and later airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he eventually passed away as a result of the severe injuries sustained in the intentional hit. Semedo, who was initially arrested on the scene, faced charges of attempted murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. However, with Smith’s death, the charges against Semedo were upgraded to murder.
A detailed investigation involving witness statements and surveillance footage pointed towards Semedo as the individual driving the Rav 4 who struck Smith and proceeded to hit him again after backing up. Shockingly, Semedo then allegedly left his vehicle, armed with a brick, and continued to assault the helpless victim as he lay on the ground.
Authorities have refrained from disclosing any connection between Semedo and Smith, nor have they provided insights into a potential motive behind the gruesome attack. Semedo is set to appear in Brockton District Court for arraignment, where more information is expected to come to light. Legal representation details are yet to be revealed.
