Correction Officers Assaulted by Rikers Island Inmates in Violent Day: Exclusive Story

New York City – Two correction officers at Rikers Island were attacked by inmates on Monday, resulting in severe injuries to the guards, according to sources familiar with the incidents.

In the first assault at the George R. Vierno Center around 1 p.m., an officer tried to intervene in a gang fight involving about 10 inmates. Despite using pepper spray to stop the brawl, the inmates continued to fight and one struck the officer with a food pan lid, causing a deep gash on his hand that required four stitches.

The 22-year-old officer, who had been on the job for only nine months, recounted the incident, mentioning that he was simply trying to prevent further violence among the inmates.

In a separate attack at the Robert N. Davoren Complex around 6:15 p.m., a female correction officer was punched in the face by an inmate, even after she sprayed him with pepper spray. The officer, a seven-year veteran, suffered facial and sinus fractures as well as a cut under her eye.

Both incidents highlight the dangers faced by correction officers at Rikers Island, where violent confrontations have been on the rise. Union officials reported over 150 attacks on correction officers since December 2023, including slashings, stabbings, spitting incidents, liquid splashings, and sexual assaults.

These incidents have raised concerns about safety and security at the facility, especially with the upcoming ban on the use of solitary confinement for violent offenders set to take effect in June. The Mayor’s veto of the bill was overridden by the City Council, leading to fears that the new restrictions could further exacerbate the risks faced by correction officers.

The ongoing challenges at Rikers Island, particularly with regards to inmate violence and officer safety, underscore the need for comprehensive reforms and enhanced security measures to protect both inmates and staff. The incidents serve as a reminder of the complex issues surrounding prison management and the importance of addressing safety concerns in correctional facilities.
