Putnam County, Florida – Law enforcement officers face numerous dangers in their line of duty, with traffic stops being one of the most hazardous tasks. Recently, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office encountered a particularly risky situation involving an explosive device that left Sgt. Ryan Owens injured.
The incident occurred near Moseley Avenue and St. Johns Avenue when Sergeant Owens came across a PVC pipe that seemed to be used for smoking meth. Upon closer inspection, he noticed that the pipe was sealed on both ends, leading him to handle it with caution. Unfortunately, the device exploded within seconds, covering him in a hazardous chlorine powder and causing significant harm.
Colonel Joseph Wells, from the Sheriff’s Office, emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that the explosive device could have caused far worse injuries. Fortunately, Sergeant Owens was wearing a protective vest that shielded him from most of the shrapnel, although he still required hospitalization and extensive testing.
The suspect, Charles Legault, now faces multiple charges, including possession of an explosive device, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and weapons offenses. Despite the severity of the incident, authorities believe that Sergeant Owens’ quick thinking and proactive approach prevented a potentially catastrophic event from occurring in a different location.
The Sheriff’s Office also discovered a significant amount of crystal meth inside the suspect’s vehicle, hinting at potential additional charges. Currently, Legault is being held without bond as the investigation continues to unfold. Colonel Wells expressed relief that the situation did not escalate further, highlighting the importance of vigilant and decisive actions in such high-risk scenarios.
As Sergeant Owens recovers and prepares to return to duty, the community remains grateful for his bravery and commitment to ensuring public safety.
