Thakurnagar, West Bengal – The tension between Trinamul Congress and BJP escalated in Thakurnagar last night, following an alleged attack on Trinamul Congress Rajya Sabha MP Mamatabala Thakur by BJP Bongaon MP candidate Shantanu Thakur. The situation in North 24-Pargana’s Gaighata has led to a significant police presence, with Shantanu’s security personnel also on site.
Tensions rose further when TMC Rajya Sabha MP Jahar Sarkar posted a video of the incident on social media, denouncing the attack as an act of violence. The clash between Mamatabala Thakur and Shantanu Thakur stems from their roles as influential figures within the Matua community in Thakurnagar, a religious center. The divide between BJP and Trinamul supporters within the community has led to ongoing disputes, even involving legal proceedings in the Calcutta High Court.
In the midst of the religious festival season, the recent turmoil has disrupted the peace in Thakurnagar. Mamatabala Thakur has lodged a complaint against Union Minister Shantanu Thakur for alleged physical assault, leading to a war of words between the two parties. BJP’s state president, Sukanta Majumdar, defended Shantanu, citing the minister’s explanation of the incident and highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance on women’s empowerment.
The incident took place at the residence of Binapani Devi, known as Boro Ma, who was a respected figure within the community until her passing in 2019. Mamatabala Thakur accused Shantanu Thakur of breaking into Boro Ma’s house, verbally abusing her, and making threats in the presence of family members. Shantanu, on the other hand, claimed that as Boro Ma’s grandson, he had the right to access the residence, leading to the confrontation with Mamatabala and her daughter.
The ongoing clashes between the two political figures have not only disrupted the community but have also highlighted the deep-rooted divide between BJP and Trinamul supporters. The allegations of assault and harassment have further fueled the political tensions in Thakurnagar, sparking a debate over women’s safety and empowerment within the community. As the situation unfolds, both parties continue to exchange accusations and defend their positions in the public eye.
