Gaza City, Gaza Strip – World Central Kitchen (WCK) recently mourned the loss of seven aid workers killed in an Israeli military strike in Gaza, as global condemnation mounts over the tragic incident. The nonprofit organization identified the victims as a mix of nationalities – a dual US-Canada citizen, a Palestinian, three Britons, an Australian, and a Pole, all part of a WCK convoy struck by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Erin Gore, CEO of the organization, paid tribute to the fallen workers, describing them as heroes whose memories will forever be cherished.
The IDF acknowledged the incident and initiated an investigation, acknowledging the strike as a “grave mistake” and stating that there was no intent to harm the aid workers. Among those killed were John Chapman, James Henderson, and James Kirby, three British citizens who served on WCK’s security team. Kirby, a military veteran, previously served in the British armed forces in Afghanistan and Bosnia. Family and friends expressed their deep sorrow over their loss, with Kirby’s cousin expressing disappointment in the lack of an apology from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Additionally, the victims included US-Canadian citizen Jacob Flickinger and Palestinian volunteer Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha, who at 25 was the youngest casualty. The Australian government praised Lalzawmi “Zomi” Frankcom, highlighting her past humanitarian efforts in Australia and abroad. WCK founder José Andrés, who created the organization after the Haiti earthquake in 2010, criticized Israel for what he described as the intentional targeting of the WCK aid workers, leading to calls for an independent investigation into the strikes.
The WCK, known for its food aid initiatives in conflict zones and disaster-stricken areas, paused its operations in Gaza following the tragic incident. The organization had been working to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where a UN-backed report revealed alarming levels of food insecurity. Despite the challenges faced, WCK remained dedicated to providing essential assistance to vulnerable populations, showcasing resilience and commitment to their mission.
