Foothill Ranch, California – A trial has begun for Samuel Lincoln Woodward, a 26-year-old man accused of fatally stabbing his former classmate, 19-year-old Blaze Bernstein, near his home. The prosecution alleges that Woodward, tied to a white supremacist organization, targeted Bernstein because of his sexual orientation. The defense, however, argues that Woodward’s actions were not motivated by hate but rather by undisclosed mental health issues and struggles with his own sexuality.
The case, which was filed six years ago, came to light when Bernstein’s parents reported their son missing on January 3, 2018. Bernstein, a University of Pennsylvania student home for the holidays, had last been seen by his parents in Foothill Ranch. A subsequent investigation led to the discovery of Bernstein’s body in a shallow grave at Borrego Park on January 9, 2018.
