Remembering Tyrone Foley: Whitehouse Hero Honored 35 Years After USS Iowa Tragedy

Whitehouse, Texas – The Whitehouse City Council paid tribute to Tyrone Foley, a graduate of Whitehouse High School who tragically lost his life in the USS Iowa explosion 35 years ago. Foley was one of the 47 sailors who perished in the battleship explosion off the coast of Puerto Rico on April 19, 1989.

During their meeting on Tuesday, the council approved a proclamation declaring April 19, 2024, as “Tyrone Dwayne Foley Day” in honor of the late sailor. Foley was described in the proclamation as a standout student and athlete during his time at Whitehouse High School, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track.

Known for his dedication and talent, Foley also made significant contributions to his community through his involvement in the Smith Temple Church of God in Christ. Mayor James Wansley highlighted Foley’s values of courage, integrity, and selflessness, underscoring the impact he had on those around him.

In a poignant moment, City Councilman Victor Boyd, a fellow Navy shipmate of Foley, shared personal memories of their friendship and the lasting impact Foley had on those who knew him. Boyd emphasized the importance of honoring the memory of all the sailors involved in the USS Iowa explosion, expressing the sentiment that they should never be forgotten.

Reflecting on their friendship, Boyd recalled Foley’s infectious smile and love for music, particularly songs by Lionel Richie and the Commodores. As a tribute to his friend, Boyd has been visiting Foley’s gravesite annually on April 19 but felt compelled to seek a special commemoration on the 35th anniversary of the tragedy.

The city council’s official declaration of “Tyrone Dwayne Foley Day” serves as a lasting tribute to Foley’s legacy and the sacrifice he made while serving his country. The proclamation symbolizes the community’s commitment to honoring and remembering those who have given their lives in service to the nation.
