Chicago: Young Girl Killed, 10 Others Injured in Gang-Related Shooting Among Family Gathering

Chicago, Illinois – Eleven individuals were shot, including a young girl who tragically lost her life, in what Chicago police suspect to be gang-related violence on the South Side of the city. The incident occurred on Saturday night when a group was standing outside a family gathering.

Among the victims were four children, with an 8-year-old girl succumbing to her injuries after being shot in the head. Additionally, a 1-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were in critical condition. A 9-year-old boy also suffered injuries from a graze wound to his finger and was hospitalized, according to police updates on Sunday.

The number of shooting victims was revised to 11 from 8, with updated ages provided for the victims compared to initial reports shared during a late Saturday news conference.

As of Sunday, there were no suspects in custody. Deputy Chief Don Jerome stated that the shooting took place when shots were fired at the crowd gathered outside the family event at approximately 9 pm on Saturday. He emphasized that the incident was not random and likely tied to gang activity, condemning the perpetrators for their “horrific and unacceptable” actions.

Responding to a gunfire alert, police officers quickly administered aid to the victims, applying tourniquets and chest seals as necessary. The victims, which also included adults ranging from 19 to 40 years old, received medical attention promptly.

Witnesses reported that a black sedan approached the crowd, and someone inside the vehicle opened fire before fleeing the scene. Authorities were also informed by witnesses of the possible presence of two shooters on foot, further complicating the investigation.
