Crash Leads to Murder Charge for Man Who Drove Car into Lake, Killing Wife

Phoenix, Arizona – A man in Goodyear is facing murder charges after crashing his car into a lake, resulting in the death of his wife. Anthony Maiorana, 35, was indicted by a grand jury following the incident on March 22 near Estrella Parkway and Willis Road.

According to Goodyear Police, Maiorana veered his vehicle into the gated community’s lake, where he was able to escape, but his wife, Megan Maiorana, was unable to exit the vehicle. Tragically, a dive team confirmed her deceased. Anthony was taken to the hospital before being arrested and booked into jail.

Police reports revealed that Maiorana’s blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit at the time of the crash. Witnesses reported hearing a vehicle speeding followed by screams prior to the incident. County Attorney Rachel Mitchell commended the citizens and officers who attempted to rescue Megan’s life.

Before emergency responders arrived, 16-year-old Ethan Cakmak jumped into the cold lake from his nearby apartment to try and save the driver. His courageous act was witnessed by his father, who promptly called 911.

A trial is scheduled for September of this year to address the tragic events that unfolded in Goodyear. The community has been shaken by this heartbreaking incident, highlighting the importance of responsible driving and the selfless actions of individuals who strive to help those in need.
