Explosion Forces Mississippi Elementary School Relocation: University Steps in to Help

MERIGOLD, Miss. – Faculty and staff at Hayes Cooper Elementary School in the Mississippi Delta faced a sudden crisis when an explosion occurred, resulting in two teachers being injured and prompting the school’s relocation. The incident, which occurred last Thursday at 7:25 a.m., led to an emergency evacuation plan being put into action at the education center in Merigold.

Students at the facility were swiftly transported to the Merigold Community Storm Shelter, while buses headed to school were rerouted to a local crawfish restaurant’s parking lot to wait for parents or guardians to collect them. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is currently investigating the cause of the explosion, forcing a significant change in the school’s operations.

Fortunately, Delta State University stepped in to provide immediate assistance by offering a facility for the affected students to continue their education in person. Delta State president Dr. Dan Ennis expressed readiness to help, emphasizing the importance of supporting the community during times of crisis.

Classes for the elementary students resumed at DSU, with a warm welcome from members of the Delta community, including the football team and popular mascots. The collaboration between the university and the school showcased a sense of unity and support during a challenging period.

Hayes Cooper Elementary School is expected to remain on DSU’s campus for the rest of the semester as investigations continue into the explosion. School officials are already looking ahead to summer plans, considering the need for alternative arrangements until the building’s safety is confirmed.

SuperTalk Mississippi News sources suggest a gas leak as the likely cause of the explosion, though official confirmation is pending. In the meantime, the injured teachers are receiving treatment in the hospital, with hopes for a speedy recovery and eventual return home. Plans are in motion for the school’s future, focusing on ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and staff members.
