WHANGĀREI, New Zealand – A man who launched violent attacks on three individuals within a span of three months managed to avoid a prison sentence. Nemaia Fiatau, 21, faced sentencing at the Whangārei District Court for multiple violent charges that occurred between January and April 2023.
One of Fiatau’s most egregious offenses took place at a Whangārei Gull service station in March 2023. He engaged in a heated altercation with a man whom he had previously clashed with and resorted to violence by striking the victim in the head with a wooden bat, resulting in a fractured eye socket and the need for surgery.
In another incident a month prior, Fiatau had a confrontation at a BP station where he physically attacked an attendant who refused to unlock the pump due to previous incidents of petrol drive-offs involving Fiatau’s vehicle. Subsequently, Fiatau resorted to aggressive behavior, high-kicking the attendant in the jaw.
During a separate violent episode in April 2023, Fiatau’s drunken state led him to physically assault his girlfriend while she was driving, prompting members of the public to intervene before the situation escalated further. Judge John McDonald condemned Fiatau’s actions, particularly highlighting the severity of the bat attack and the assault on the BP worker, emphasizing the importance of understanding right from wrong at the age of 21.
Fiatau’s sentencing resulted in eight months of home detention as an alternative to prison, with Judge McDonald acknowledging the involvement of The Grace Foundation in providing support and guidance to Fiatau.
