Greyhound Bus Shooter Convicted of Second-Degree Murder in Oroville

Oroville, California – Asaahdi Coleman, a Sacramento man, was found guilty of second-degree murder and attempted murder with gun enhancements for a shooting incident on a Greyhound bus in Oroville in 2022, announced Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey on Thursday. Coleman, a 23-year-old alleged member of a Sacramento gang, was also acquitted of three counts of attempted murder.

During the trial, Coleman’s defense lawyer argued that his unspecified mental illness impaired his ability to form intent to kill, claiming he was shooting blindly without the intent to kill. Ramsey stated that Coleman faces a maximum sentence of 74 years to life in prison, with a possibility of parole after 25 years due to California’s Youthful Offender Parole law enacted in 2019.

The fatal incident took place on February 2, 2022, when Coleman opened fire on a Greyhound bus, resulting in the death of 43-year-old Karin Dolton. Several others were injured, including an 11-year-old girl, a 25-year-old pregnant woman, a 32-year-old man, and a 38-year-old man.

Coleman’s sentencing is scheduled for May 31 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Corie Carraway. The conviction of second-degree murder and attempted murder with enhancements reflects the serious nature of the crimes committed by Coleman on the fateful day in Oroville.
