Memphis Police Officer and 18-Year-Old Suspect Killed in Deadly Exchange of Gunfire

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Tragedy struck in Memphis as a police officer and an 18-year-old suspect lost their lives in a deadly exchange of gunfire that also left two officers and another suspect injured, according to Police Chief C.J. Davis.

The fallen officer, Joseph McKinney, had only joined the Memphis Police Department in 2020. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was also fatally wounded in the incident.

Another officer, initially in critical condition, has since been upgraded to non-critical, while a third officer sustained a grazing gunshot wound and was treated at the scene.

Additionally, a 17-year-old suspect involved in the incident is currently in critical condition due to injuries sustained during the exchange of gunfire.

The heartbreaking incident unfolded in the early hours of Friday morning on Hewlett Road and Horn Lake Road in Southwest Memphis. Authorities responded to a call regarding a suspicious vehicle at Horn Lake Road and Charter Avenue around 2 a.m. Upon approaching the vehicle, the suspects opened fire on the officers, leading to retaliatory gunfire.

Expressing her sorrow, Chief Davis issued a heartfelt plea for an end to gun violence, emphasizing the need for collective community efforts to tackle the escalating issue.

The vehicle in question fled the scene before being apprehended in the 400 block of Hewlett Road. While one suspect was swiftly captured, the other attempted to escape but was eventually located nearby.

In a troubling revelation, Chief Davis disclosed that the deceased 18-year-old had a prior arrest history, including charges related to stolen vehicles and possession of illegal firearms. Despite the serious nature of the charges, the suspect had been released without bond.

As investigations into the tragic incident proceed, the District Attorney and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have been summoned to oversee the inquiry.

Friday’s fatal shooting adds to the wave of violence gripping Memphis, with the city recently surpassing 100 homicides for the year. The alarming statistics underscore the urgent need for community-driven initiatives to address the root causes of violence and foster a safer environment for all residents.
